Interview with Jesse Kimmel-Freeman:
Where does your inspiration come from?
It comes from everyday things. It could be a song I heard, or a movie I saw, even things that are said to me often create something for my stories. That is one of the greatest joys of being a writer- being able to take inspiration from everything around you.
Why do you write YA?
I wish it was something amazing or deep, but the truth is that I write what I like. If there was one genre that I had to chose to read for the rest of my life, it would be YA. There is usually more sides to each character, more drama, more changes. They also move a little faster- or at least in my opinion.
In a world that is full of vampire and werewolf stories, why would you choose to write an entire series that involved them?
I wrote Bella Notte because I wanted to read the book I was writing. I made a list of all the traits that I could think of for both vampires and werewolves, I asked friends and family to help add to it. I wanted to make sure that my vampires and werewolves were different. There are some elements that follow tradition, but most of my characters are very different from what is out there. The Bella Series allows me to get their entire story out instead of just trying to get a tiny piece out.
Do you have any advice for youngwriters?
Never get discouraged. You will hear’no’ a lot, but that doesn’t mean you are a bad writer or that yourwork isn’t good enough. It just means that you need to have some morepatience and not give up. Never let someone tell you that you cannothave your dream.
Are you working on anything now?
A bunch! I am editing my second book inmy series, Bella Vita, working on illustrations for the sequel book to one of mychildren’s books, and thinking about what to write next for the thirdbook from my series, Bella Tristezza. Oh, and I’ve begun research for two more seriesthat I want to write once I finish my Bella Series.
