[News] Borders Books Closer To Shutting All Stores

July 18, 2011
By

Borders StoresBorders Books continues to inch closer to closing all of its stores after not being able to reach a deal Sunday night. The Wall Street Journal did report this morning that Borders was in discussions late Sunday night with Books-A-Million to try to find some sort of a deal to keep its remaining 259 superstores alive. This continues to be bad news for book lovers. Even if you read all books digitally, there still is something about the experience of browsing through a bookstore (and buying a couple of books). This saga will come to a close within the next 2 days as their bankruptcy case comes to a close. Our hearts go out to the workers in Borders who have been in limbo wondering if they have jobs. The ex-Borders workers here at Digital Book Today wish you the very best.

[News] Amazon Tablet Coming in October

July 14, 2011
By

The rumors have finally become reality. Amazon is planning on releasing a tablet computer in October to battle the Apple iPad. Amazon has long been offering digital content without a hardward device (except for books and the Kindle). Amazon is hoping with the release of a tablet that its customers will now be able to stream movies, buy music, store data on its servers, and most importantly serve as a gateway to the huge selection of products available on Amazon.com.

Amazon faces a real uphill battle against the iPad, just like all of the other tablet manufacturers. However, many people have been looking forward to a cheaper tablet alternative than the iPad. Amazon could sell their tablet at or below cost and make money on products and services that they sell. Amazon has been doing this very same thing with the Kindle. Most experts agree that Amazon does not make any money on the actually sale of a Kindle, but makes their profits Read more »

[News] Kindle 3G w/Special Offers now $139

July 13, 2011
By

Amazon announced this morning an agreement with AT&T who will sponsor the Kindle 3G with Special Offers (ads) for $139 instead of the normal price of $164. Digital Book Today had an excellent review of the Kindle with Special Offers (click here to see this post) discussing the experience with the special offer/ad based Kindle. I will restate what I summarized before, the ads in this version of the Kindle have no impact on the actual reading of your book. It is not even present while reading. While I have both the WiFi only version in my house and the 3G+WiFi, the convenience of having the 3G is a great plus. If you or somebody you know is in the market for a Kindle, I would suggest to take into consideration the $139 Kindle 3G with Special Offers. Click here to see the Amazon News Release.
